Treatment procedure

First you schedule your initial consultation, where your skin care advisor will consult with you on the best plan for your skin. Only 20 to 25 percent of the skin is targeted at one treatment; clinical studies show that an effective treatment schedule is 4 to 6 sessions, spaced 2 weeks apart. Your scheduled treatments take place in our upscale cosmetic office suite.  NO hospital!

•  Prior to treatment, your skin will be cleansed. Then OptiGuide Blue, an FDA-approved water-soluble tint, will be applied to highlight the skin to be treated.
•  Next, a topical anesthetic ointment is applied to the treatment area; it will require 45–60 minutes to take effect.
•  Then your treatment is performed using a soothing ointment as the contact lubricant for the laser.
•  The blue tint and anesthetic are washed off immediately after treatment.
•  The treatment itself takes approximately 60 minutes.

 

Pain

Patients routinely report no sensation during Fraxel Laser treatment other than a slight tingling of heat. A strong numbing ointment is applied before the treatment and patients may use a chiller to direct cool air to the skin – to counter the heat sensation if necessary – it works! After your Fraxel Laser treatment, your attending laser specialist will advise you to apply moisturizer and sun block, and to keep your head elevated for the rest of the day, but otherwise you may continue your regular activities. Women can apply makeup the next day and men can shave without discomfort.  For the sensation of warmth after treatment, you may apply cold compresses. The FDA considers the Fraxel Laser gentle enough to be used under the eyes, right up to the lash line.

 

Side effects

Fraxel Laser treatment has minimal side effects, and offers speedy healing with little to no downtime. Side effects typically involve mild swelling, which should subside within a day or two and some redness that usually fades over several days.  Any redness is easily hidden by regular makeup. The process of repair will involve a ‘bronzing’ color and some tiny flaking which can be gently scrubbed off. Be sure to use moisturizer and sunscreen with minimum SPF of 30 PLUS UVA protection on a daily basis as part of your new morning routine. You can apply makeup immediately after treatment and continue your routine activities. There is extremely limited, if any, risk of infection. Oozing or crusting has never occurred.

 

Precautions before treatment

•  Avoid aspirin and NSAIDS (ibuprofen, Aleve, Motrin, etc.) for 1 week prior to your procedure and throughout your series of treatments.
•  Discontinue any acid-containing cosmetics two weeks before your procedure – glycolic and retinoic acid are examples.
•  Advise your skin care advisor if you have a history of cold sores (Herpes).  Suppressive anti-Herpes medication is used as a standard pre-treatment routine in all cases.

 

Results

New epidermal skin will develop within 24 hours. The majority of clients see a positive change after each and every treatment! Of course, if your initial skin problem is dramatic, your results will be dramatic as well! Acne scarring achieves virtually complete improvement. Sun damage, discoloration, and other signs of aging are also reversed. Over a few weeks and months your skin continues to repair the deeper dermal tissues that have been treated, and you will enjoy continued and ongoing improvement in your new healthy, youthful appearance!
