Restylane®: Is it Right For You?

Finally, there is a safe, effective, and affordable cosmetic filler available for treatment of moderate to severe facial wrinkles! The wrinkle treatment product – Restylane® – has at last gained FDA approval for use in the United States.

The Problem: What happens as we age?

Our skin is the largest organ of our body. It comprises three layers – the outer, middle, and subcutaneous (deep inner) layers. The dermis (middle layer) of skin functions as the skin’s support structure, and contains collagen, elastin, and other biological substances – including hyaluronic acid. Along with collagen, hyaluronic acid plays a very important role in keeping skin healthy. Hyaluronic acid helps to “bind water,” which is necessary to maintain the skin’s volume and prevent dryness and wrinkling.

As we age, the production of collagen and hyaluronic acid naturally decreases and the elastin fibers become looser, gathering in formations visible as wrinkles, fine lines, and folds. The collagen begins to collapse, and our elastic tissue uncoils. Our skin, as a result, loses the support of the collagen and the ability to hold moisture – so the skin folds, and lines and wrinkles form readily. This natural process is speeded up by smoking, alcohol consumption, sun-bathing, and poor nutritional habits, to name a few, all of which contributes to “loss of beauty” during the aging process.

Restylane® is a natural cosmetic dermal filler that restores volume and fullness to the skin to correct facial wrinkles and folds, such as the folds that extend outward from the edges of the nose and down toward the mouth. Restylane supplies hyaluronic acid, the natural substance in the dermis (middle skin layer) in every human being that functions to provide fullness and volume to the skin.

Restylane is the first and only dermal filler made from non-animal-based hyaluronic acid, in the form of a crystal-clear gel called NASHA™ – Non-Animal Stabilized Hyaluronic Acid. It’s biodegradable, completely biocompatible with human hyaluronic acid, and totally stable. Even though it is biosynthetically produced, it is identical to the natural substance produced by our bodies.

What Restylane® Can Do For You!

Restylane® – a “natural” Beauty Lift – provides an instantaneous and natural solution to a natural problem!

Made in Sweden – the “land of natural beauties” – Restylane® treatments can restore fullness, contour, and smoothness that have been lost with time and sun exposure. This safe, natural substance provides immediate, long-lasting natural enhancement. Restylane® creates a natural beauty lift without surgery.

How do Restylane treatments work?

Restylane®is injected directly into the skin with an ultra-fine needle. It is carefully and artistically placed into the wrinkle, scar, depression, or folds. Your doctor may massage your skin gently to optimize contouring of the gel. The filler “plumps” up the skin to correct the problem area.

This treatment works in 2 ways: once injected into the “mid to deep dermis” (middle layer of skin), the Restylane® adds volume and fullness which smoothes out facial wrinkles and folds. Then, the gel integrates into dermal tissue, attracts and binds to water molecules and helps to maintain volume. Restylane® can also be used to enhance the way the mouth looks, imparting virtually any desired contour to it. This treatment not only lessens lining, like those dreaded “smoker’s lines,” but can also add fullness to the lips.

The results are immediately visible!

Benefits of Restylane® treatments:

How safe is Restylane®?

Cosmetic surgeons have been using Restylane® since 1996 – worldwide. There is virtually no risk of animal-based disease transmission or allergic reaction because this is a non-animal based, fully biocompatible product. No allergy testing is required. Restylane® is FDA approved.

Were any scientific studies done on Restylane®?

Yes. A scientific study enrolled 138 subjects who each received Restylane® in one nasolabial (nose to mouth) fold and Zyplast (collagen) in the other fold. After 6 months, more than twice as many Restylane®-treated folds continued to experience excellent results – versus the collagen-treated folds.

How long does Restylane® last, and will I need more treatments?

The average treatment results will last 6 months or longer. It lasts twice as long as collagen! Typically, patients get treatments twice a year. We know that having a “touch-up” treatment, before the product fully dissipates from your last treatment, will enhance the lasting effects.

How is Restylane® different from collagen?

Bovine collagen is animal-based (from cows) and may cause allergic reactions in humans. Pre-testing is required before treatment with bovine collagen. Restylane® is non-animal-based – no allergy testing required – no waiting – with no risk of animal-based disease or allergic reaction. The results from Restylane® treatment have been proven to last twice as long as collagen treatments!

Do the injections hurt?

Restylane® is injected into the skin in tiny amounts with a very small needle, resulting in minimal discomfort. The procedure is simple and convenient, and the results are instantaneous. To optimize your comfort during the short procedure, pre-treatment with topical anesthesia is advised. In some instances, your doctor may inject local anesthesia to make the procedure more comfortable for you.

What do I look like after the procedure?

You can visibly see the improvement immediately after the procedure. It is common to have a small amount of swelling and possibly some mild bruising due to the use of a needle to puncture the skin. Redness of the treated site is also common. This may last a few hours to a few days.

Botox® and Restylane® – what’s the difference?

Restylane® is natural, a cosmetic dermal filler – just like your own body makes in younger years. Botox® is a natural, purified protein that is used to block nerve transmission and relax muscles that usually contract, causing wrinkles and folds. Depending upon goals, personal needs, and concerns – doctors choose the treatment that will best meet their patient’s needs.

In our practice, patients have been very pleased after receiving treatment with both products, as we often use Botox® and Restylane® sequentially as a nonsurgical treatment for wrinkles and folds.

How much does Restylane® cost?

Restylane® is very affordable. Over the long term, the cost is much less than similar procedures – because the results last longer! The total cost depends on the volume needed to achieve the desired results. Each patient’s treatment is “customized” based upon individual concerns and goals determined at the time of evaluation – so the cost does vary from patient to patient.
